To my girls,
Candy, Carmen, Monique, Felicia, Tonya and Angelique:
From the first day I laid eyes on each one of you, my life changed for the better. Each of you is special in your own unique way. I watched you grow from being my little "Pettie Girls" into being my great "Wonderful Women."
You gave me more happiness than I could have ever expressed to you. Each time I saw you or heard your voice, a smile gleamed across my face.
Thank you for giving me wonderful grandchildren and unbelievably great grandchildren. You all have made my life worth living.
God knew it was my time to rest and I could not resist His call. While you might be hurting right now, remember that God is your Comforter and he will take care of you.
I love you,
Daddy

As this Daddy's Little Girl, I never needed or wanted for anything. He loved me unconditionally, never judged me, never hit me, and never raised his voice to me; this taught me how to quietly love, read my Bible, and be kind to people. I'm proud to be a "Pettie Girl," a Landscaper's daughter. Love you Daddy! Missing your laugh!

Dear Daddy,
"Hey Mokie" come sit on the brakes for me," is one of the phrases I will always remember growing up. I would run out the door as fast as I could, in a hurry to oblige your request! Because I was small, I literally had to sit on the brakes to keep the truck from moving while you finished your work on it! At times it seemed as if I was the boy you never had and that was okay with me. Those moments were the special times I spent with you and I will always cherish them.
You labored so hard to provide for us and I thank you for the sacrifices you made and for being the best dad that you could be. Thank you for being the kind, genuine, gentle and generous person you were on this earth as you were a blessing to many in the community that we lived.
Daddy, it's finally your time to rest and I'm so glad you're at peace and that you and Momma have met again on the other side. I know you will be watching over us always. Love, Monique

In my lifetime, I don't think I will ever find anyone as giving as my Mother and Father. When I was 10 or 11 years old, I heard a commotion in the back yard. I thought my father was out there by himself, but I heard more than one voice and it wasn't my Dad's. So I went to peek out of the kitchen window to see what was going on. Momma and my sisters were next door and up the street at Aunt Sarah's house, so I knew it wasn't anyone of them. On my tippy-toes I looked out the window and saw my Dad wrestling with some guy from the neighborhood. He almost had him pinned on the ground when the guy pulled Daddy's arm and his shoulder out of place. I started to go get the phone and call the police, when I heard him say to this guy, "What did you have to do that for? I told you I didn't have any work for you to do on this job. I was going to give you 20 bucks to help you get by 'til next week, now I might have to get the doctor to put my shoulder back in place." Contrite, the guy (I can't remember his name) told my Dad that he needed to buy a shirt to go on a job interview and didn't think he would have enough money to buy a shirt and feed his kids if he only had $20. I watched my father unbutton his own shirt, slide it of his dislocated shoulder and hand it to the guy. It was a new shirt. We had just given it to him a couple of weeks before for Father's Day. At first the guy refused the shirt, but my Dad insisted that he take it. Then Daddy popped his shoulder back in place, said a choice word or two and reached in his pocket and gave the guy a 20. I was hopping mad at that nutcase of a guy. Pulling my Daddy's shoulder out of place, who did he think he was? Still peeking, I saw the guy sit down on the swing and he started crying. My father looked over at the kitchen window saw me peeking and gestured that I should get out of the window, but I couldn't. I was amazed at how forgiving and giving my Daddy could be inspite of the pain I knew had to be shooting through his arm and shoulder. He patted the guy on the shoulder and told him he would see him at church on Sunday. Daddy came in the house and told me to get him some Asprin and water. I did it as quickly as my short legs would let me. That memory has always been stuck in my head. My Daddy literally gave a man the shirt off his back and the last 20 in his pocket. When I asked him why did he do it, he simply said, "He needed it more than we did."
Momma was the same way. She would feed every kid in the neighborhood. She baked so much bread she could have put Rainbow out of business. People would bring her big bags of flour, yeast, sugar, eggs and milk. Every turn of the dough had so much love and laughter in it you could taste it when it came out of the oven. She would let us help need the dough, even though we made a mess. When we didn't have much, it always seemed like we were eating with Jesus when he served the two fish and five loaves of bread with crumbs to spare. Momma made jelly, canned every vegetable known to man, and just about and gave almost all of it away.
That's why we all have this spirit of giving, no matter what our own situation or circumstances may be, someone else is worse off than you.
Thank you Momma and Daddy for leaving us such an amazingly powerful legacy of love and community.
